The pediatric inpatient service at Kaiser Santa Clara Hospital provides medical and surgical care for children among a total population of 250,000 members of the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan in Santa Clara County. Approximately 20% of the population is under age 18 years. During a standard one-month rotation on the pediatric inpatient wards, residents diagnose a wide array of diseases and treat ward- to ICU-level severity of illnesses, ranging from gastroenteritis and minor trauma to septic shock and ARDS. Our full-time staff has representatives from many pediatric subspecialties including: neurology, pulmonology, cardiology, nephrology, hematology/oncology, infectious diseases, gastroenterology, critical care, surgery, and rehabilitation medicine. In 2009, a pediatric Neurosurgical program will be added as well. Each of these services consults regularly on the Inpatient Service.
