Respiratory symptoms and problems are the most common cause of children’s families seeking physician encounters, and the #1 cause of school absenteeism, hospital admission and impairment of normal play and sports.  For all these reason s it is essential the pediatric resident become familiar with recognition, diagnosis and care of respiratory diseases.  The rotation will emphasize common symptoms—such as cough, wheeze, stridor and apnea—and diseases including asthmas, bronchiolitis, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, cystic fibrosis, laryngotracheomalacia, croup, aspiration, gastroesophageal reflux, obstructive sleep apnea, neuromuscular and neurological diseases compromising respiration and, upper or lower respiratory infections.
