Example of a TPN Cycling Order
Let us suppose that you would like to cycle a TPN volume of 1400 cc's over 20 hours. Whereas a constant infusion over 24 hours would run at 58.3 cc/hr, plugging the numbers into the TPN Cycle Calculator, we find that the order for this cycle should be written as below:
TPN to cycle over 20 hours. Fluids to run at 20 cc/hr in hours 1 and 20; 40 cc/hr in hours 2 and 19, and 80 cc/hr in hours 3 through 18. Please check dexsticks 1 hour post-peak and 1 hour after cycle ends.
